Znüni - the delicious second breakfast

In Switzerland, people say "nüni" at 9 o'clock in the morning. They refer to "zu nüni", or "at nine o'clock" for short: Znüni! This cute word refers to a small meal between breakfast and lunch. For some Swiss people, the time until lunch is simply too long. They need a tasty snack to give them an energy boost in the morning.

Tips for a delicious snack

The Swiss generally lead a very healthy lifestyle and so their snack is also a good meal. That's why fresh fruit and vegetables are the most important ingredients. We have put together four tips for you that you should bear in mind for a snack:

  1. Small portions: The snack should satisfy your hunger in the morning and give you energy until lunchtime. But make sure you don't eat too much. If your stomach is too full, it can have the opposite effect and make you feel tired rather than energetic. Drink a glass of water or unsweetened tea with your small portion and you'll be ready for the next few hours!
  2. It's all in the mix! Small snack mixes make your snack varied and special. For example, how about a few Dried mangoes or a Berry-nut mix of tart physalis, sweet raspberries and cranberries? Or a few crunchy Brazil nut kernels , Cashew nuts and blanched almonds ? Your taste buds certainly won't get bored!
  3. Variety: The small snacks should of course taste delicious and be enjoyable. So that it doesn't get boring, you can get creative and enjoy different things for every snack. How about rice cakes and cottage cheese one day and fresh wholemeal bread with tangy cheese and cucumber the next? Small skewers with a mixture of fruit, vegetables and cheese also add variety and color to your snack plan.
Sugar-free snacks: To ensure that your snack provides you with important nutrients and vitamins in the long term, it is advisable to avoid sweets such as chocolate or gummy bears at snack time. You should also be careful with fruit juices, as they often contain a high proportion of fruit sugar. It's best to opt for fresh fruit and vegetables - they're healthier and taste great!
